You walk into class feeling flat. Maybe it’s been a long day, your head is full, and honestly, part of you considered not coming. Then 45 minutes later, you’re walking out feeling lighter. Clearer. Like something shifted.
That’s not a coincidence. And it’s definitely not just endorphins.
There’s a lot happening inside your brain during a group fitness class, and the research behind it is genuinely fascinating. Here’s what’s actually going on.
As soon as you start moving, your heart rate rises and blood flow to the brain increases. This sounds simple, but the effect is immediate. The prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for focus, decision-making, and mood regulation, gets a significant boost in oxygenated blood.
Studies from the University of Illinois found that even moderate aerobic exercise produces measurable improvements in attention and cognitive function within minutes. So that sense of your head clearing early in class? It’s real, and it’s immediate.
This is where the chemistry gets interesting. Exercise triggers the release of several key neurotransmitters:
Dopamine is your brain’s motivation and reward chemical. It’s the reason a class can pull you out of a slump you’ve been sitting in all day.
Serotonin plays a major role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Low serotonin is closely linked to anxiety and depression. Exercise is one of the most effective natural ways to raise it.
Norepinephrine helps your brain manage stress. It sharpens focus and can reduce the physiological impact of anxiety.
The three of them together are essentially the same chemicals targeted by antidepressant medications. Research published in JAMA Psychiatry found that regular exercise is as effective as medication for mild to moderate depression in many cases. That’s not us saying fitness is a cure for everything. It’s science saying movement genuinely matters for your mental health.
When you’re mid-class, pushing through an interval or settling into the heat in Connect, your body is also managing cortisol, the primary stress hormone.
Here’s the thing about cortisol: modern life keeps it elevated chronically. Work pressure, phone notifications, poor sleep, rushed mornings. Your nervous system stays stuck in a low-grade stress state. Exercise gives cortisol somewhere to go. It burns through it in the way it was designed to be burned through, by physical exertion.
This is why a class that feels intense in the moment often leaves you calmer afterwards. The stress response did its job and completed the cycle. Research from Harvard Medical School confirms that regular aerobic exercise for example, reduces baseline cortisol levels over time, making you physiologically more resilient to stress. This is one of the biggest misunderstandings regarding cortisol and exercise.
Yes, endorphins are real. They’re your brain’s natural painkillers, released during sustained exercise to help you keep going. But the “endorphin rush” (not the smoothie) you’ve heard about isn’t the whole picture.
More recent research points to endocannabinoids as the chemicals behind that post-workout sense of ease and wellbeing. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that endocannabinoids, not endorphins, were primarily responsible for the mood-lifting, anxiety-reducing effect after moderate cardio. These are the same receptors targeted by cannabis, produced naturally by your own brain in response to movement.
It explains why a Cycle class or a RunLift session can genuinely quiet a busy, anxious mind in a way that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.
One of the most profound effects of regular exercise happens not in the moment, but over time. Exercise promotes the production of BDNF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, often described as fertiliser for the brain.
BDNF supports the growth of new neurons, strengthens existing neural connections, and improves memory and learning. The hippocampus, the part of the brain most associated with memory and emotional regulation, actually grows in volume with consistent exercise. Research from Columbia University found meaningful increases in hippocampal volume in adults who exercised aerobically over six months.
This is why the benefits of showing up consistently go so much deeper than how you look or how fit you feel. You’re actively investing in the long-term health of your brain.
The brain benefits of exercise are well established. But group fitness adds another layer that solo training can’t replicate.
Synchronised movement, which is what happens when you’re in a room riding to the same beat or moving through the same sequence, triggers a release of oxytocin, the bonding hormone. Oxford University research found that people who exercised in groups had significantly higher pain thresholds and greater feelings of social bonding than those who worked out alone, even when the physical effort was identical.
That sense of connection you feel in a class, the shared effort, the music, the room… it’s neurochemistry at work.
You don’t need to spend hours training to get a meaningful neurological benefit. Research consistently shows that 45 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise delivers the full range of brain benefits described above. Which is why we built our classes around exactly that.
One class won’t fix a hard week. But over time, consistent movement genuinely changes how your brain functions, how you handle stress, how you feel day to day, and how you show up for everything else in your life.
